TEACHER LEADERS ATTEND EDUCATOR SUMMIT HOSTED BY THE NUTRIENTS FOR LIFE FOUNDATION
Teachers Offer Insight and Expertise on Resources, Tour Soil Lab
Washington, DC – Science and Agriculture teachers from around the nation met in Omaha, Nebraska, July 22-24 to work with the Nutrients For Life Foundation staff to review and critique the NFLF curriculum and resources. Ten teachers representing both coasts and parts of the Midwest shared their thoughts and ideas on how the resources could be improved and expanded.
“We are so thankful to have some phenomenal teachers connected to the Nutrients for Life Foundation that are passionate about plant and soil science,” said NFLF Executive Director Harriet Wegmeyer. “The goal for NFLF, as well as these teachers is to have resources available that teach the critical importance of plant nutrients.”
Teachers selected to attend the summit include the following:
Dawn Alexander, Tom McCall Elementary, Redmond, Oregon
Cindy Bellamy, Mt. Dora High School, Mount Dora, Florida
Nancy Bridge, Olympia High School, Orlando, Florida
Angela Bruce, Northwest Middle School, Travelers Rest, South Carolina
Anita DeWeese, Skyline High School, Pratt, Kansas
Nancy Gifford, Monomoy Regional Middle School, Chatham, Massachusetts
Melissa Grant, Western High School, Russiaville, Indiana
Christiane Schau, Robinson Middle School, Las Vegas, Nevada
Ann D Smart, Cabrini High School, New Orleans, Louisiana
Kimberly Lolich-Stout, Chippewa Valley High School, Clinton Township, Michigan
Throughout the meeting, teachers discussed the desired path for future materials and programs for the Foundation. The teachers examined components of the Nutrients for Life resources and arrived at a ‘top ten’ list of priorities that will benefit instructors that teach soil science and plant nutrients.
While in Omaha, the teachers were able to tour Midwest Laboratories, a family owned soil testing facility. Through this experience, the teachers gained valuable insight into the soil profile and the laboratory processes that generate results for soil recommendations. With this new information, teachers can take back what they learned to help their students have a better understanding of farming and crop production.
The Nutrients for Life Foundation is a global organization consisting of members and collaborative partners that develops and distributes science-based materials to improve plant nutrient literacy, soil health knowledge and promotes fertilizer’s role in sustaining a growing population. Plant nutrients, especially nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, are also required to keep our parks, gardens, playgrounds, sports fields and golf courses green and healthy in communities from coast to coast.
All information developed by our Foundation is science-based and supported by agronomists. Our supplemental educational materials are based on our curriculum which has been reviewed by the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum complex and research organization.
